The Disorder Archetype: acting when recent values become unusually scattered
Direction comes from how scattered a single monitored reading's recent values have become; the method takes its one side only when that disorder rises above its own recent norm.
Method archetype

The Disorder archetype watches a single monitored market reading and asks one question of its recent values: how scattered have they become. When the recent readings cluster tightly the method calls them ordered; when they fan out across a wide range it calls them disordered. The method acts only when that disorder rises beyond what is normal for the reading itself.
The word that matters here is scatter. This archetype does not ask whether the reading is high or low, and despite the way it is sometimes labelled it does not turn the reading into a standardized score. It asks how spread out the recent values are around themselves, a measure of disorder, and that spread, not the level, is the whole signal. It is why this article only ever calls the input a monitored market reading.
The measure: an information reading of how spread the recent values are
The method measures disorder with an information measure of the recent window. It bins the recent values into a small distribution and asks how spread that distribution is. When the values pile into a few bins near one level, the distribution is concentrated and the disorder reads low. When they fan out evenly across the range, the distribution is flat and the disorder reads high.

This is the heart of the method. A concentrated distribution means the reading has been behaving predictably, sitting near a level; a flat one means it has been all over its range, behaving erratically. The information measure turns that difference into a single disorder number, computed on the recent past and shifted by one bar so it never peeks at the value it is judging.
Spread, not level: the distinction that defines the family
It is worth being very clear about what disorder is not. Two windows of a reading can sit at the very same central level and yet carry completely different disorder, because disorder is about how scattered the values are around that center, not about where the center is.

Against its own normal range: acting on a burst of disorder
A disorder number on its own does not say much, because what counts as a lot of scatter is different for a calm reading than for a jumpy one. So the method compares the current disorder to its own recent normal range and acts only when the disorder climbs above that range. It is looking for a burst of scatter relative to what the reading itself has been running.

Because the comparison is to the reading's own recent norm, the bar moves with the reading. A quiet stretch sets a low bar, so a modest burst of scatter clears it; a long disordered stretch raises the bar, so steady high disorder eventually becomes the new normal and stops counting as a burst. The method is built to notice when disorder is unusual for this reading now, not to flag disorder in the abstract.
One side only: a single-direction method by construction
Unlike the archetypes that can lean either way, this method takes a single side. When disorder rises above its norm the method takes its one direction, and the rest of the time it rests flat. There is no opposite position; the construct simply does not have one.

Be careful about what the single side means. The method is not claiming that disorder points up or down; disorder is a property of the distribution, not a direction. The one side is a structural choice baked into the construct, a decision to express the disorder read as a single kind of position rather than a long-or-short call. A reader should treat the direction as fixed by design and the disorder as the thing actually being measured.
The mask: standing aside when the inputs are unreliable
In front of the disorder read sits a quality and availability mask. When the inputs the method depends on are unreliable or missing, the mask stands the method aside and the state resolves to flat, whatever the disorder reading happens to say.

This matters because a disorder estimate is only as honest as the reading feeding it. A gap or a distortion could manufacture scatter that was never really there, so rather than act on a reading it cannot trust, the method declines to take its side. The mask is a stand-aside, never a separate trade: it only suppresses the read when the data is not there to support it.
How a position ends: the disorder settles or the read is lost
A position does not stay open forever, and it can end in more than one way. At the signal level, the position falls away when the disorder settles back within the reading's normal range, so there is no longer a burst to act on, and a read that becomes unavailable resolves to flat. Deployed models may also close a holding through standard protective exits, a protective stop, a profit target, and a maximum holding time, before the disorder itself settles. The exact levels and durations are model-specific and not part of this family-level description.
Validation and lifecycle
Models built this way are judged through the same staged process as every other family: an idea, a backtest, and a held-back walk-forward before the method is relied on. A family-level explainer is not proof that every model in the family has cleared every gate.
The caveat: disorder is a read on texture, not a forecast of direction
There are two caveats a reader must hold onto. First, disorder describes the texture of the recent reading, how scattered it has been, and not where it is headed; a single-direction method built on it is making a structural bet, not a directional forecast. Second, an information measure over a finite window is a noisy estimate, and because the bar adapts to the reading's own norm, the same amount of scatter can count as a burst at one time and as ordinary at another.
The honest way to read a method like this is therefore against a simple buy-and-hold benchmark, asking whether its single-sided, disorder-triggered positions added anything beyond what a passive position would have had, and to remember that the disorder read is an estimate of texture rather than a fact about the future. Flag, but interpret carefully rather than act mechanically: disorder has been elevated long enough that the normal-range bar is catching up to it, or the reading is jumping in and out of its normal range so the position turns over repeatedly.
What this archetype is NOT
- It is not a standardized-level method. There is no z-score and no percentile rank of the reading itself; the decision variable is the disorder of the recent distribution, not where the reading sits, despite the construct's internal name.
- It is not a two-sided method. It takes a single direction by construction and rests flat otherwise; there is no opposite position to take.
- It is not a directional forecast. Disorder is a property of the recent distribution, not a claim that the reading is about to rise or fall.
- It is not a multi-input or relational method. It reads one series, not a blend of inputs and not a relationship between series.
- And the monitored reading is not necessarily price. The method works on whatever single market read it is given, and this explainer keeps that read masked throughout.
What we can and cannot claim
This explainer describes the family mechanism, not the wiring of any one model. Which reading is watched, the length of the window the disorder is measured over, the number of bins in the distribution, and the exact normal-range bar are model internals, not stated here because they are estimated and re-checked per model rather than fixed constants the article is withholding.
